National Coaching Standards Domain 3
Standard 3: Physical Conditioning
Standard 12: Design programs of training, conditioning, and recovery that properly utilize exercise physiology and biomechanical principles.
Benchmark: know the components of physical fitness and prescribe appropriate levels of each in relations to age and sport-specific demands
Example: Beginner triathlete for WMU triathletes in training program. We needed to build the subjects fitness while not overworking her and potentially causing injury. Due to this, we built the subject up slightly, then gave time for an easier week. This trend continued until the subject was able to continuously handle to training load required for a sprint distance triathlon.

Standard 3: Physical Conditioning
Standard 15: Plan conditioning programs to help athletes return to full participation following injury
Benchmark: Maintain regular communication with the physicians and parents/guardians of injured athletes about relevant demands of the sport in preparing conditioning programs following injury.
Example: One of our Dalzell Coaching athletes suffered a torn meniscus before joining. Through constant communication as well as a strength based program to help the subject get back to 100%, this athlete was able to make a full recovery and go on to set a new half marathon personal record by over 20 minutes that year. Since this injury, this athlete has gone on to qualify for the Boston Marathon.
- During this athletes time, constant communication was kept between both the coach and athlete to ensure proper progress and avoid any setbacks.
