Coaches
Owner/Head Coach: Derek Dalzell
The owner of Dalzell Coaching LLC was born and raised in the town of Bay City, MI. From a young age, Derek always had a passion for athletics and obtaining an elite level of performance. Whether it be pitching in the Summer, playing hockey in the Winter, or throwing the pigskin around on Friday nights, Derek always found himself in an athletic environment and surrounded by quality individuals. In college Derek played four years of NCAA Division 1 baseball at Centenary College of Louisiana. Upon completion of his four years, Derek needed a way to remain competitive and found the sport of triathlon. After having the experience of working under a coach and increasing his abilities, Derek knew this is what he wanted his life to become. He returned to community college in Denver, Colorado in order to both acquire his prerequisites for Graduate school and ride his bike in the mountains. After his year out west, Derek returned to Michigan to pursue his Master of Arts in Coaching Sports Performance (July 2015) as well as a Master of Arts in Sports Management (May 2016) at Western Michigan University. While at Western Michigan University in his first year, Derek started Dalzell Coaching LLC and has found it to be the best job he's ever had.
Derek prides himself on working with others to achieve goals through consistent training and extraordinary teamwork. His philosophy on coaching is that everyone is an individual and therefore requires a slightly different twist on the best modes to reach their goals.
Assistant Coach: Joe Siegel
Joe Siegel’s passion for endurance sports began by cycling across the country twice in events to raise funds and awareness for cancer research and patients. From there he transitioned into a short course triathlete and finally into a cyclist where he is currently a Cat 2 racer. His background in Chemical and Systems Engineering has led to a holistic view of endurance athlete “system”. All parts are important and contribute to confidence and success on race day: Training, diet and nutrition, gear and equipment, fitness, mental acuity, work/life/training balance and race day strategy. A good coach will provide input, guidance and advice over the entire system and this is the philosophy Joe tries to implement for all athletes, including himself.
